The Era of Mozambique Ruby

Mozambique Rubies have changed the market of ruby trade since their launch in the gemstone market in 2009. But how do these fiery red gemstones make their way from the mines of Mozambique to the global jewelry industry?

The beginning of a new era for rubies started in Montepuez, Mozambique where the first red ruby gem was discovered near the village of M’sawize in the Niassa National Reserve. M’sawize was stranded shortly after the new mines of Montepuez was found and one of the largest ruby mines was discovered. It has become home for one of the largest deposits of ruby. This region has become a major hub for ruby mining and major mining conglomerates have captured areas. Leading the way is Gemfields and Fura Gems, both companies dedicated to responsible and ethical mining.

Start of Mining in Mozambique

The new class of middlemen, the “Bush Traders” were connected to thousands of international companies, usually Thai and West African Traders. In a short time this high quality red gemstone found its way to the international market and gained recognition worldwide. In 2011, to handle the Mwiriti mines the Mozambique government signed a joint venture with Gemfields which led in establishment of Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) company and then the mining started on an industrial level.

In 2017, Fura Gems entered the Mozambique operations and the mines became more wanted and desirable by the top gemstone wholesalers and jewelry companies as it guaranteed long term supply and consistency. GIA has studied these deposits and approved of these ethically sourced rubies.

These Mozambican Rubies are known for their intense deep red color or pigeon blood red hue and exceptional clarity. The Montepuez region has become the most prominent area for ruby mining supplying 80% of the world with high quality rubies, making it more desirable than the Myanmar rubies which have been unable to provide continuous supply and do not adhere to the rules of ethical mining. Here, at NGM our vision is to lead our gemstone and jewellery industry towards ethical sourcing and save our planet and humankind from malpractices for a better future. That’s one of the most important reasons why we shifted our focus towards ethically sourced Mozambique Rubies. Today, these rubies are considered to be one of the top choices worldwide by jewellery manufacturers and wholesalers.
