Introducing the Star of Australia

The first time we saw this piece of beauty was with an Australian sapphire miner back in 2018. The mesmerizing beauty of this 11.61 carat lies within the stone itself.

Let’s go back first. Back to 2018.

Mined around that time, this rough was in the hands of NGM by November 2021. Since then every month I would look at this rough and say “One day this will turn the day into night”. This is how the rough looked at first;

Different Shades of Rough Gems

Honestly, which color do you see? This is the reason we called it the Star of Australia.

Problem #1 – there was a big crack on the face of this Australian Sapphire. Very normal situation to fight for a producer of australian sapphires – we encounter this challenge in most Australian sapphires, especially given the quality conditions now.

        Problem solved – inclusion mostly removed very carefully.

tremendous weight loss occurring on the rough

Problem #2 – the crown/table is too high and so we had to get rid of the high crown by reducing the height – thus a tremendous weight loss occurring on the rough.

solved by pressing the crown just to be enough for a beautifully cut Australian sapphire

After spending some time with the problems – we were able to get a cleaner piece of preformed rough of this Aussie sapphire! Being unheated, we had some hiccups on the silk part of this piece but we got it reduced to the minimum most level during the preforming stage.

Presenting a 11.61 carat STAR OF AUSTRALIA – the one and only piece of this size, totally Unheated, Untreated – 100% natural, GIA certified (Aus, N, Blue-Yellow) & Lotus certified (Unheated, Parti Color Blue-Yellow). Was available to view in person only in the Tucson Gem Show 2025! Still under NGM’s ownership of this investment piece.
