Ceylon Sapphire Calibrated Sizes: Challenges Only Expert Manufacturers Understand

Dated: 25th Dec 2025.

Ceylon Sapphires, as the name suggests mined in Sri Lanka, globally renowned for their royal blue color, purity and brilliance. But  when the market demands calibrated sizes, the process becomes extremely complex. Producing the right calibrated gems for high-end jewellery takes deep expertise and years of manufacturing experience.

While the customers see polished stones and beautiful gem parcels, manufacturers understand the real challenge behind accurate color, flawless finish and calibrated dimensions. In this article we are going to talk about the hidden problems that manufactures like us understand.

  • Uneven Rough Shapes makes calibration difficult

As we all know the right rough is hard to find and to top that the ceylon sapphire rough has off symmetry ovals, intense color zoning, flat nodules and more. To cut them into 4×3, 5×3,6×4,7×5 the cutters face heavy weight loss while preserving color.

  • Tight Tolerance Demand by Customers

High-Grade sapphires require precision cutting. +/-0.05mm (premium) and =/-0.10mm (commercial) maintaining such accuracy becomes difficult as thing such as pavilion angle, crown height, girdle thickness as manufacturers we have to take care of all the factors.

  • Matching Colors across hundreds of stone

Consistency, same saturation level, same tone needs to be achieved. But Ceylon rough      is naturally variable and can show different colors after cutting and polishing.

  • High Weight Loss = High Production Cost

To achieve calibrated sizes, manufacturers can loose a significant portion of the rough. This results in rise in cost per carat and more difficult to make rather than free-size ceylon sapphires.

  • Skilled Labour is Limited

Hand-cutting cutters with accuracy are very hard to find as they need years of experience to cut with precision and at NGM we do not compromise on the quality of our gems. We are in the business for more than 30+years and our cutters have years of experience overcoming each challenge in production.

  • Consistency in Repeated Orders

Fulfilling repeat orders with consistency in ceylon sapphires becomes challenging as color variance in rough, similar quality rough is hard to find as the rough prices are sky-rocketting. But we make sure to deliver our loyal long-term clients with uniformity month after month and their trust has always helped us to do long-term business.
